Microtonal Guitar Books

Ron Sword

Guitarist, Author, and Luthier Ron Sword has been teaching for the past seven years throughout Florida, and more recently, giving clinics, classes, and lectures on microtonal and new music. Sword has gained recognition on a national and international level for his guitars and his microtonal theory and scale reference books. In March 2010, he participated in the 'International Bohlen-Pierce Symposium' coordinated by the Boston Microtonal Society and Georg Hajdu for the book, "Bohlen Pierce Scales for Guitar", and the nine-string 'Bohlen-Pierce' touch-guitar, introduced at Northeastern Conservatory and Berklee College of Music.

In 2007, Sword began building guitars after a long history with his father, which soon evolved into a guitar company specializing in baritone and extended range instruments pushing the boundries, as well as quality hand-made concert classical guitars in the tradition of the greats. Currently he plays guitars in ranging from 12 to 41 equal divisions of the standard Octave, as well as various experiments with 'Just Intonation' and 'Non-octave' based tunings and scales.

Sword is currently a visiting clinician for the IAAA (The Institute for the Advancement of Aural Arts http://www.IAAuralArts.org), an international visiting group of musicians and educators who present concerts, masterclasses and workshops based on advanced musical thinking on a worldwide basis. Ron has authored over twelve books now, published through the IAAA, which are slowly making their way into the hands of musicians, teachers, and stores with distribution all over the world in multiple languages. Beyond simply changing the temperaments and tunings, Sword is experimenting with different compositional resources available through new music theories and abstract methods of composition, open source programming, and exploration of xenharmonic and xentonal families other than the diatonic scale. A dedication to new sounds never before heard or played, new moods, new architectures, and the creation of new instruments through Sword Guitars will breathe new life to the world of music.
